Drum Scanning Services
- We scan slides, transparencies, color negatives, and black-and-white
negatives; from 35mm to 8"x10".
- We only perform RGB scans. We only scan at high resolution, 16-bits
per RGB channel. We save scans in our preferred workingspace, Ekta Space
PS 5, but can save to Adobe RGB also. We only scan at optical resolution
(i.e., we don’t interpolate). Our philosophy is to scan at the
highest possible resolution that will give you the best possible result
– so that you will hopefully never have to scan your film again.
- Aztek 8000 Drum Scanner features:
- Optical scanning resolution up to 8,000 samples per inch (spi),
variable aperture down to 3 microns.
- Dynamic range is 4.2.
- Bit depth is 16 bits per RGB channel.
- Max file size is 4 gigabytes
- You will need to tell us the resolution you need, as the number of
samples per inch, pixel dimensions, or file size.
- Prior to scanning, we gently clean the film you submit to remove dust
using a static vac film cleaner, an anti-static film brush, and/or compressed
air. Fingerprints, oil, and residue that may already be on the film
are not removed. Please ensure that your film is as clean as possible
before sending it to us. We do not use film cleaning fluid. We never
wipe the surface of your film. Film is handled by the edges only.
- Before scanning, your film is mounted on the drum with Kami mounting
fluid. Fluid mounting eliminates Newton’s Rings and gives results that
are superior to dry mounting.
- After scanning, the film is thoroughly cleaned and washed using a
"no touch" process to remove any residual mounting fluid deposits.
The film is not wiped and the emulsion is not touched during cleaning.
- Scans are optimized for correct tonality and color balance during
the scanning process. However, as we scan to ensure all color information
is captured, leaving you to stretch and adjust the histograms as desired,
additional color correction is often necessary. The most important factor
in producing a great digital print is having a great scan to work from.
Our goal is to give you a scan that captures all color information and
detail, giving you the freedom to manipulate the information as you
desire. We understand that you are the artist and we want to supply
you with this foundation, leaving those aesthetic decisions that create
a great print up to you.
- No sharpening or other digital filtering is performed during scanning.
- Scans are opened in Photoshop and
- Examined at 100% to ensure that there are no artifacts caused by
scanning or drum mounting.
- Scan parameters and notes are entered into the File Info fields.
- Dust spots caused by mounting the film on the drum are removed using
the clone tool. Other defects, such as scratches, fingerprints, etc.,
that were on the film when you sent it to us are not removed. You
get whatever was on your film when you submitted it to us.
- We do not sharpen the image or use any other Photoshop filters.
- Saved as 48-bit RGB uncompressed TIFF files.
- Scan files are compressed, as necessary or if requested, into a ZIP
archive file. There is no image degradation or data loss when the file
is compressed or expanded.
- Scan files are burned onto an archival-quality CD-R using Joliet format.
If the file will not fit on a single CD-R, we will burn it to DVD-R.
We will burn multiple files on a single CD-R or DVD-R, providing they
fit, of course.
- We keep your scans on our hard drives for one week, just in case of
any accidents.
- Satisfaction is guaranteed. If you are not happy with the scan, simply
tell us why and we will scan again at no charge or refund what you paid.
